Burgundy – limited stock

Filed under: new wines — Simon Hedley Felton @ 12:33 pm

Knowledge is key in Burgundy, and for every gem we unearth there are many more forgettable encounters along the way. Our ever expanding portfolio comprises boutique Burgundy wines that are carefully sourced by our team of wine experts, as well as more famous names, all offered in  very limited quantities, and guaranteed to take the gamble out of what  is also one of the most complicated wine regions to get to grips with.

However, stocks are very limited and we only have single bottle stock of some of these exceptional Burgundy Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay…

Bonneau du Martray’s 25 acres of continuous vineyards is a rarity in Burgundy. Martray benefits from an outstanding terroir to near the famous hill of Corton. Yields are kept low and 16 parcels of grapes are vinified separately to reflect their respective soils, climate and aspect.

Jean Grivot produces exceptionally pure, elegant Pinot Noirs which are consistently poised at the pinnacle of premium Burgundy. The Grivot vineyards in Vosne-Romanee are managed by Etienne and his wife Marielle – the fifth generation of Grivots to run this elite Burgundy estate. Since Etienne took over from his father in 1990 he has traded lesser quality vineyards for more prestigious parcels within Burgundy’s best sites, including Clos de Vougeot, and his holdings now cover a staggering 15 different appellations!

Michel Lafarge’s 2004 Volnay comes from a tiny (just over 0.5 ha) monopole vineyard which is biodynamically farmed and lies on the site of the 11th century Château de Volnay. Once owned by the Ducs of Burgundy from the 13th century onward, the château itself was destroyed by fire in 1749, but its vineyards, as well as the cellars now belong to the family.

Domaine Ramonet is the undisputed master of Chassagne-Montrachet. Although Ramonet is best known for white wines (and rightly so), this red Clos de la Boudriotte is a superb wine with eye-opening depth and character.

Genot-Boulanger’s classic Puligny-Montrachet is made from old vines (45 years old) that contribute to the great depth and complexity of this world-renowned wine style. Puligny-Montrachet is one of the most famous and finest white wine communes and appellations in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune district

Pierre Bouree produces classic-styled Burgundy from its own exceptional vineyard plots as well as grapes bought in from growers with whom it has built up a long-standing relationship thereby securing some of the finest fruit in each vintage. These are stunning traditional wines which typify the best that Burgundy has to offer whilst keeping prices sensible.

Mouton Rothschild – 14 vintages, 21 wines

Mouton Rothschild 1998

Mouton Rothschild 1998

We have been expanding our range of Mouton Rothschild vintages, and we now have 21 Mouton wines covering 14 Bordeaux vintages.

Mouton Rothschild is not only highly desirable for the contents of its bottle, but for its labels, which are highly sought after by many collectors due to the actions of Baron Philippe Rothschild, who in 1945, to commemorate victory in WWII, commisioned artist Philippe Jullian to design a label, which included a V for Victory. This started a unique feature and each year since, with a couple of exceptions, an artist is commisioned to design a label. Famous artists such as Chagal, Miro, Dali, Bacon, Picasso and even Prince Charles have all contributed, for which they were paid 5 cases of the vintage they were depicting and 5 cases of an older one.

Mouton Rothschild vintages we have in stock include:

Mouton Rothschild 1950
Mouton Rothschild 1960
Mouton Rothschild 1961
Mouton Rothschild 1964
Mouton Rothschild 1966
Mouton Rothschild 1970

Mouton Rothschild 1993 – the original label

Filed under: new wines — Simon Hedley Felton @ 3:02 pm
Mouton Rothschild 1993

Mouton Rothschild 1993

Château Mouton Rothschild 1993 is in pristine, collector condition, but the label has been a source of considerable controversy.

Mouton 1993 actually comes in two different labels: the original, with its delicate yet unprovocative portrait nude of a pre-teenager by Balthus, was banned in the States following protests from America’s neo-puritans, and USA imported labels were replaced with a blank creamy white-colored label.

The Mouton 1993 we are selling has the original label.

“…the original label…selling at $50 more than the blank creamy white-colored label.” eRobertparker.com

Chateau La Clotte – a vertical tasting

Filed under: new wines — Simon Hedley Felton @ 9:52 am
Chateau La Clotte

Chateau La Clotte

La Clotte is a tiny (four hectare) Saint-Émilion Grand Cru château run by three charming ladies: winemaker Nelly Mouliérac, Dominique Tord (business manager) and owner Odile Plantade.

This wonderfully homespun affair is graced with some of the most exceptional soils in SaintÉmilion, and it is an absolute joy to visit this rustic Bordeaux farmhouse embedded in a spectacular limestone hillside overlooking Saint-Émilion.

La Clotte highlights the contrast between Bordeaux’s palatial châteaux and petite producers whose souls are reflected in their wines. All work at La Clotte is carried out lovingly by hand and this wonderful Grand Cru is made to be enjoyed young. But with only around 1200 cases produced each year, this vertical tasting is a very rare chance to taste the true soul of Saint-Émilion.

Madame Capbern-Gasqueton – chapeau

Filed under: News — Simon Hedley Felton @ 9:43 am
Madame Capbern-Gasqueton

Madame Capbern-Gasqueton

I was very sad to have heard the news that Madame Capbern-Gasqueton, the great legend of Calon-Segur and Saint-Estephe, recently passed away.

Madame Capbern-Gasqueton was one of Bordeaux’s most well-respected and well known vignerons and is a great loss to the industry.

Madame married into Calon-Segur in 1947, yet since the death of her husband in 1985 Madame G had been forcibly at the helm – the ‘Margaret Thatcher’ of the wine world who’s unwavering confidence in the terroir of Saint-Estephe and Calon-Segur made the Chateau one of Bordeaux’s most loved classed growths.

I was fortunate to have met Madame Capbern-Gasqueton just once on a field visit to Bordeaux. Fortunate, because very few were allowed into the hallowed environment in which such rigorous winemaking and attention to detail made Calon such a Bordeaux powerhouse under Madame’s iron grip. I was immediately struck by the size of the great lady’s shoes, an image which has stuck with me like Thatcher’s handbag.

But the iron lady of wine, was strangely endearing. You knew where you were with Mdme and you were in a very special place. Her place. The Calon name is wrapped up in a big heart, a heart Madame Capbern-Gasqueton proudly wore on her sleeve.

Madame’s daughter Hèléne and granddaughter Isabelle will continue on to lead both Calon-Segur and the Cru Bourgeois property Chateau Capbern Gasqueton and have some very big shoes to fill, while Vincent Millet (of Chateau Margaux) continues in charge of the vinification. But in the meantime why not enjoy some of Calon’s great wines made under the great lady herself…

Bordeaux 2001 vintage: “a great vintage to buy up now” eRobertParker.com

Filed under: News — Simon Hedley Felton @ 11:09 am

Bordeaux 2001: “a great vintage to buy up now” eRobertParker.com

Bordeaux2001Worthy of note, this week, is a selection of our 2001 Bordeaux from top Bordeaux estates at very keen prices. 2001 was a reversion to the more classic style of Bordeaux following the heady opulence of the 2000 vintage. These are wines of elegance, restraint and balance. 2001 was also largely over-shadowed by 2000 and doesn’t get the praise it deserves.

As for pricing, 2001 Bordeaux wines offer more bang for you buck than other recent hyped vintages. A very good vintage for wine drinkers, and one that is entering its drinking window.

Chateau Pichon Lalande 2001 (£92.50) – “A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style… exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character…time in the cellar.” eRobertParker.com

Chateau Pavie 2001 (£145.00) – “One of the candidates for wine of the vintage…exhibits a tight but promising nose of crushed stones, a liqueur of blackberries, cherries, and black currants, and subtle smoke and licorice in the background. Powerful, with impressive elegance… A profoud effort for the vintage.” eRobertParker.com

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte 2001 (£55.00) – “This elegant, stylish, deep ruby/purple-colored
effort reveals notes of smoke, graphite, and red as well as black fruits in its perfumed, nicely
evolved bouquet. With sweet flavors, medium body, outstanding concentration, and impressive
purity.” eRobertParker.com

Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2001 (£85.00) – “A beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d’Estournel exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass…It builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish.” eRobertParker.com

Chateau Talbot 2001 (£49.99) – “Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Rich and generous for the vintage. Much better than from barrel.” Wine Spectator

Chateau Angelus 2001 – (£160.00) – Château Angelus 2001 is a quintissential right bank style from a classic and traditional tasting Bordeaux vintage.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion 2001 (£179.50) – La Mission is famous for its quintissentially-tasting Graves style… “Do not ignore the quality of this wine. Excellent.” eRobertParker.com

Châteaux Margaux Pavillon Rouge 2001 (£180.00) – “…a stupendously fine second wine.” eRobertParker.com

Château Cheval Blanc 2001 (£299.00) – Château Cheval Blanc 2001 is drinking at its peak right now.
