Willi Haag is one of Germany's finest wine producers, and yet its prices, like this mouthwatering Riesling, have not yet caught up with its reputation.

German wine labels often seem rather complex, but are easily explained...The grapes for this Riesling, picked by selective harvest (Auslese), were grown on the premium slatey soils of the Juffer-Sonnenuhr vineyards near the village of Brauneberg. This vineyard location has the perfect microclimate for growing Riesling. And some of the steepest slopes in the valley keep winemaker Marcus Haag and his team as fit and healthy as his grapes, from which he produces wines of astonishing depth and character.

Botrytis nose, with pear and peach fruit, mimosa and floral notes, wood smoke, and a citrusy, minerally edge. Penetrating, intense, mouth-watering palate with lovely concentration, balance and that same lime-zest bite over the ripe fruit centre, this is classic and classy Riesling.
