Torbreck, The Struie, 2003

Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia

Torbreck Struie is a cleverly thought out blend of fruit from 44-year-old Eden Valley and 80-year-old Barossa vines.

The higher altitude Eden vines gives the wine its European cool-climate elegance, while the Barossa fruit brings power and intensity to this wine. This great marriage has made the Struie a boutique cult wine.

(Torbreck is named after a forest in Scotland where David Powell worked as a lumberjack.)

Reviews..

“Of all the Barossa Valley wineries to grab the headlines in the US, with demand pulling prices up to undreamt levels, Torbreck stands supreme. David Powell has not let success go to his head, or subvert the individuality and sheer quality of his wines, all created around very old, dry-grown, bush-pruned vineyards.” James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion

“An exotic bouquet of blackberries and other sweet fruits is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, rich red with great purity as well as focus, a laser-like precision, huge intensity, and a blockbuster finish that lasts nearly a minute. It will be even better with 2-3 more years of bottle age, and should last for two decades.” eRobertParker.com

“Good colour; bursting with layers of juicy, sweet, blackberry, plum, cherry and dark chocolate fruit flavours; oak and tannins just a backdrop.” James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
