Penfold's Grange 1980 is full, rich and powerful - one of Australia's finest and most famous wines. Officially listed as a heritage icon of South Australia: a wine of extraordinary dimension and power.
Penfolds was founded by an English doctor (Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold), who began making fortified wine for his parents because of his perceived medicinal value. Penfold's ethos continued until the 1950s when Jeffrey Penfold tasked winemaker Max Schubert to cater for changing consumer tastes.
Almost single-handedly Schubert lifted Australia's wine industry out of mediocrity, primarily through the revolutionary Grange Hermitage, and has arguably been the most influential figure in the modern Australian wine industry. Reviews.."...massive earthy, meaty, bacon fat notes intermixed with notions of scorched earth, blackberries, currants, pepper, and spice. Full and rich with slightly rustic tannins, it has a good 20 years of life ahead of it. " eRobertParker.com (June 2009) |
