Château du Caillau’s 2009 earthy Malbec is the best we have tasted from this Cahors gem – a classic Cahors style, with an extra juicy twist courtesy of a good dash of Merlot. The success of the 2009 vintage can be attributed to the extended growing season in southern France, with warm conditions extending well into late autumn and the ability of Malbec (unlike Merlot for example) to withstand, indeed revel in, such warm, dry spells. Caillau has been in the same family for over 100 years, and its present day vineyards have been divided into distinct parcels by Philippe Bernède, each being grown and vinified according to its unique terroir, before being blended into one deeply concentrated southern package. Reviews..Rich and ripe on the nose with great concentration of earthy red black fruits that flow into a concentrated palate with some ripe tannins adding backbone. Finishes long. Best ever from this impressive estate! |
