We have been lucky to secure a few bottles of this rare vintage Armagnac from what is now a ghost distillery.
A distinctive style of French brandy from the region of Gascony, Armagnac lays claim to being the oldest distilled spirit in France, outdating even cognac by around 200 years. Vintage Armagnac, or produce from a single harvest, quickly became firmly established as one of the enduring symbols (along with fois gras) of the excellent produce from the region. And those from the Bas Armagnac are known for being of the highest quality.
Mature Armagnac is generally more rounded and fuller in style than cognac, both on the nose and palate, if slightly more rustic, and those from a single vintage display a marked step up in complexity. Reviews.."They [Chateau de Lacaze] are excellent examples of traditional Armagnacs and very good value." Nicholas Faith, Classic Brandy
"Tastier and spicier than Cognac." Hugh Johnson |
