Château Calon-Ségur is a third growth Bordeaux château situated in Saint-Estèphe on Bordeaux's left bank.
Calon-Ségur produces two reds: the grand vin Château Calon-Ségur itself which is a traditional style (masculine, sturdy and tannic), and the second wine the Marquis de Calon.
Calon-Ségur's emblem emanates from the late 20th century, when the Marquis Nicolas de Ségur, the 'Prince of Vines', who already owned Lafite and Latour, took control and declared: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon."
More recently, Calon-Ségur has been under the iron grip of Mme Capbern-Gasqueton, a great legend of Saint-Estèphe, who sadly passed away in 2011. Madame was one of Bordeaux’s most respected vignerons who, upon the death of her husband in 1985, had been forcibly at the helm. Her unwavering confidence in the terroir of Calon-Ségur made the château one of Bordeaux’s most loved classed growths. You knew where you were with Mdme and you were in a very special place. The Calon name is wrapped up in a big heart, a heart Mme Capbern-Gasqueton proudly wore on her sleeve.
Her daughter Hèléne and granddaughter Isabelle now have those rather big shoes to fill. |
