Château Mouton Rothschild's 1983 label was designed by Saul Steinberg, a Romanian-born American cartoonist and illustrator, best known for his work with The New Yorker. 1983 was a good Bordeaux vintage, particularly on the left bank, and Mouton, which exceeded Latour in quality, is drinking really well now. Mouton Rothschild has been under the Barons de Rothschild ownership for over 100 years, and it was the unremitting efforts of the flamboyant Baron Philippe de Rothschild that resulted in Mouton's historical upgrade to premier Grand cru status in 1973 – the only change ever made to the Bordeaux classification of 1855. Prior to the Médoc classification, Mouton's wine labels declared, Premier ne puis, Second ne daigne, Mouton suis ('First I cannot be, Second I do not deign to be, I am Mouton'). After the upgrade, the motto was changed to Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change ('First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change'). Reviews..“Dense cedary nose with lots of plum, cassis and cigar box aromas. Beautiful balance on palate. Good acidity with notes of cedar and blackcurrant. Quite a straight-forward wine but there is so much elegance and finesse. Definitely a top quality Mouton…………The palate has excellent concentration, fresh with nose of tobacco, black earthy fruit, cedar and an animally touch. Very focused with superb length. Definitely superior to Latour 1983. There is something that reminds me of a Saint Julien on the finish. A great Mouton.” eRobertParker.com |
