Château Mouton Rothschild, 1966

A.O.C. Pauillac, Bordeaux 2ème Grand Cru Classé, France

The Mouton Rothschild 1966 label was designed by painter, designer and poet Pierre Alechinsky.

Alechinsky is famous for founding the so-called COBRA (Cologne/Brussels/Amsterdam) Group, which set out to replace the existing confrontation between abstract and representational art. The Mouton 1966 label shows a ram quenching his thirst.

In 1945 to commemorate victory in WWII, the Baron commissioned artist Philippe Jullian to design a label, which included a V for Victory. This started a unique feature and each year since, with a couple of exceptions, an artist is commissioned to design a label. Famous artists such as Chagal, Miro, Dali, Bacon, Picasso and even Prince Charles have all contributed for which they were paid five cases of the vintage that they were depicting, plus five cases of a previous vintage.

Reviews..

"It is a magnificent wine, a truly great cabernet sauvignon and a great Mouton." Joe Zugelder

"This review may be generous, but I have always liked this wine, even though it borders on being slightly too dry, austere, and restrained. Nevertheless, the dark garnet color and classic sweet, spicy, tobacco, coffee, and black currant aromas are enticing. The wine still has powerful tannin in the finish, which contributes to the dry, austere character this example has always exhibited. One of the more intellectually-styled Moutons, the 1966 is a classic example of the vintage, as well as of the chateaus Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated style." eRobertParker.com (Jan 1998)
