Château Mouton Rothschild's 1961 comes from one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the 20th century. A simply stunning and increasingly rare buy.
1961 was blessed with ideal weather conditions, and a small crop due to spring frosts was ripened to perfection through a warm, dry, sunny growing season. Less fruit means more concentration and there were some truly outstanding wines, like Mouton, made for the cellar.
Mouton's 1961 label was designed by Georges Mathieu, a French abstract expressionist, and his explosive style is clearly evident on the label.
Mouton's 1961 vintage is also something of an increasing rarity, being crafted before this great Bordeaux château was granted first growth status. Reviews.."Huge, cedary, cassis, lead pencil, menthol-like aromas soared from the glass. The black/purple color revealed no signs of lightening or amber at the edge. Full-bodied, rich, and super-intense, this was an a profound bottle of 1961 Mouton…" Robert Parker, Bordeaux 1998
"Subtle in flavor, silky in texture and still firm with tannins, this Mouton is clearly outstanding in quality. Elegance, not richness, is its hallmark, and the mélange of spice-earth-fruit flavors is nearly mature." Wine Spectator (1996) |
