“Clos de Marquis has always been a reference point for excellent second wines...” eRobertParker.com
Clos de Marquis is the second label of famed Bordeaux 2nd growth, Leoville Las Cases, which was created at the end of the 19th century. In that respect it can be considered as the original second label and today is thought to equal a 3rd and 4th growth in terms of quality.
Clos de Marquis is made from younger vines or cuvees deemed just not quite good enough for the Grand Vin, and the 2000 vintage offers stunning Margaux and Bordeaux value-for-money. Your chance to taste a great second wine from a truly great vintage. Reviews..“One of the great sleepers of the vintage and probably the best Clos de Marquis I have ever tasted, this wine could easily compete with many of the vintage's classified growths. Dense, opaque purple-colored, with creme de cassis, vanilla, and cherry notes, medium to full body, an unctuous texture, low acidity, and a more evolved style than its bigger sibling, Leoville Las Cases, this dense, chewy, remarkably concentrated and stylish wine should be at its best between 2005 and 2018.” eRobertParker.com (April 2003)
“This is not a wine to be disregarded because of its 'second-class' status. It is perhaps the finest of all second wines, and the quality is superior, to my palate, to many wines from lesser classed growth properties." thewinedoctor.com (August 2009)

This was always considered one of the true values left on the left bank - sadly no more, but a maturing vintage such as this lovely 1999 will give you an idea of what all the fuss is about.
