Château Guiraud, 2001

A.O.C. Barsac (Sauternes 1er Cru), Bordeaux, France

Château Guiraud 2001 is a stunning Sauternes. Intense, concentrated, yet balanced - one of the finest wines ever produced by Guiraud.

Château Guiraud dates back hundreds of years, but it wasn't until 1981, when it was acquired by a Canadian, Hamilton Narby, that it became one of Sauternes' finest wines.

Under Narby, Guiraud's Sauternes developed great richness and concentration that have placed it at the pinnacle of Sauternes, just below its neighbour Yquem. In 2006 (over dinner) the industrialist Robert Peugeot and winemakers Olivier Bernard (Domaine de Chevalier,) Stephan Von Neipperg (Canon La Gaffelière) and Xavier Planty, the estate's director, decided to buy Guiraud.

Guiraud has the greatest respect for nature and biodiversity: 'putting living organisms back in their native environment, letting nature spring back in the place and making sure that all ecologic factors implied in the growth are well balanced.'

Reviews..

“One of the finest examples from this estate that I have ever tasted. This is a stunning ’01 Sauternes with wild honey, custard creams and a touch of orange blossom on the nose. The palate has an electrifying, citrus entry leading to layers of honeyed fruit, with a touch of spice and orange peel. Good concentration of fruit and good acidity. A standout Sauternes.” eRobertParker.com

"Golden yellow. Butterscotch and vanilla, with hints of ripe apples. Full-bodied, with lots of sweetness and a spicy apricot and honey aftertaste. Excellent concentration and balance. Loads of botrytis character on the finish. Intense."  Wine Spectator
