Château Figeac, 1982

A.O.C. Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B), Bordeaux, France

Produced from a huge crop, the 1982s were the most concentrated and profound offerings since the outstanding 1961s.

Figeac is a beautiful estate situated opposite Château Cheval Blanc - Saint-Émilion's finest producer. Between them they share the modest 60 hectares that make up the 'Graves de Saint-Émilion' terroir, of which Figeac accounts for 40 hectares, making it the largest estate in the appellation. In fact, wines crafted from Cheval's vineyard used to be sold as Vin de Figeac.

Figeac is known as the most Médoc of Saint-Émilions on account of its fine gravel terroir, and unlike most other Merlot-dominated Saint-Émilions it uses greater percentages of the Cabernets in its blends. And while its wines are similar in style and quality to that of its famous neighbour, Cheval Blanc, they come at a much smaller price premium.

Reviews..

"This is actually a younger, more concentrated wine than the 1990. A dense plum/garnet color with a slight lightening at the edge is followed by a sensational Figeac nose of mint, fruitcake, Asian spices, gobs of sweet black and red fruits, and a smoky component in the background. Medium to full-bodied with lovely freshness, this 1982 appears to be fully mature, but it tasted the same a decade ago, and it should hold at this level for another 10-20 years." eRobertParker.com
