Cheval Blanc 1990 is one of the stars of this great Bordeaux vintage and was rated a perfect 100 points by Robert Parker. 1990 produced a great (an colossal) crop of Saint-Émilion in what was the hottest year since 1947 and the driest since 1949.

Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux's most desireable wines, with a rich and illustrious history protected and currently being built upon by Pierre Lurton, one of Bordeaux's most talented winemakers. Under the current owners and rigorous stewadrship of Lurton, Cheval's 30+ year old vines are treated naturally, including no herbicides and natural fertiliser. Green harvesting and rigorous selection ensure that only the finest fruit reaches the cellar where the produce from each vineyard plot is vinified separately to preserve the character of each terroir.

Such attention to detail means that this luxury label doesn't come cheap, but with Cheval you are not paying for a label but the quality behind it.

"This wine just never lets me down. Some mahogany shades on the rim. That wonderful, exuberant, high-toned, liquorice, pruney nose. Utterly decadent. The palate is similar rich, extrovert, animally with spicy black fruits. All that rich fruits belies that dense, firm structure underneath. A massive wine with a very long finish of sweet black, slightly raisiny fruit and fig. A gorgeous 1990 that I think will outlast many others in this vintage because of its structure.
