Bunnahabhain 12-year-old single malt Scotch Whisky is a lightly-peated Islay style malt.
One of the eight Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhain (pronounced “boona’hhavn”) is also the most delicate of the Islay malts. Located in a courtyard in a remote cove on the north side of the island, Bunnahabhain was constructed in 1881 and still has a ships’ bell salvaged from a nearby wreck, once used to summon the manager from his home if he was needed urgently.
Whilst displaying the maritime character that we associate with Islay malts (sea-facing warehouses provide the perfect environment for maturing Bunnahabhain), the distillery’s natural spring water source (which has run clear for over 100 years) rises through limestone and therefore does not pick up peat on the way.
Bunnahabhain is a notoriously hard distillery to find, but visitors can at least be reassured that at the end of an arduous journey a kerb has been added to stop their cars rolling into the sea… and of course there is the prospect of a dram or two to revive the spirits…so to speak.
Tasting Notes..Bunnahabhain 12-year-old typically displays a gentle, nutty-malty sweetness with sweet, sea-air aromas on the nose.
